Coronavirus infects White House with others self-quarantining.

Trump's personal valet tested positive Tuesday after showing symptoms

Pence's Press Secretary Katie Miller tested negative Thursday then tested positive Friday.

Fauci tested negative (NIAID), Hahn tested negative (FDA) and Redfield (CDC) with an unknown test result are self-quarantining out of caution. Fauci is doing a "modified quarantine" and is believed to still be low risk even though he has decided to quarantine.

It is believed Fauci will still testify before the Senate this week. Redfield and Hahn will testify via video conference.

There has been this whole thing about how the White House wasn't taking the threat of infection seriously, not wearing masks, not social distancing.

I hope all have mild cases and recover quickly. I'm sure there are some people out there that want certain individuals to contract this virus either out of irony or malice. Whatever will happen there will happen.

You reap what you sow, right?

To me, this does speak to the panacea of testing is believe to be. Testing is important. Testing is key. We need more testing. However, look at Katie Miller. She tested negative Thursday and tested positive Friday. A test result is only good until your next contact or exposure to the virus. It's like Fauci described before with the Aids test, if you tested negative for Aids and didn't engage in the risk behavior, you are going to stay negative. With a highly contagious respiratory virus, your negative test result might only be good for an hour, or a day. So are we really going to test everyone every day? Of course not. Impossible. Even testing 2% of the population daily on a rotating basis is a facade. Because those people who tested yesterday or two days ago might need to be tested again just a day or two later if you really are trying to identify who has it.

Once again, this is an issue of leadership. In any crisis, the immediate goal is to protect the president & vp - in separate locations. Cheney's location immediately after 9/11 was undisclosed. Yet, during this pandemic, the administration has acted as if it was untouchable, not bothered to separate the two highest office holders, & apparently, not practiced the guidelines issued by the administration itself.

Now, we have 2 Pence staffers (one of whom is his press secretary, 32, & married to Stephen Miller, a Trump advisor), one Trump valet, & Ivanka's personal assistant who are positive for COVID-19. Due to interaction of some sort, 3 critical health experts on whom Americans have come to depend for accurate information are in quarantine at ages 60 & 68 along w/Dr. Fauci in semi-quarantine. The man is 79 years old.

Given that each infected person likely infects 3 other people, COVID-19 is probably going to take a run thru the administration. Six people were removed from Pence's plane last week due to their contact w/his press secretary. At that time, those 6 tested negative.

Testing is like a financial statement - it's a snapshot of what is happening at one moment in time. It can change the next day. You may have $25K in assets on Day 1, withdraw $10K on Day 2, so by Day 3, the 1st financial statement no longer accurately reflects your assets. A COVID19 test is very much like an at-home pregnancy test - it's negative immediately after conception & probably for the next 7 days. On Day 7, not pregnant; on Day 8, pregnant. The woman has been pregnant all that time but didn't TEST positive until Day 8. That's why Pence's statement that he knew for certain he was virus-free at Mayo because he gets tested once/week (for which he later apologized) was so disheartening. If the COVID-19 Task Force Director doesn't understand testing, no wonder the general public is confused.

It's not unreasonable for Trump not to wear a mask in the Oval Office alone watching TV. It's also understandable that he hates being tested; it's painful. Now, 5 months into the crisis, the pres & vp are being tested daily. What took so long? Are both the pres & VP still in the same location, attending the same meetings, mingling? I've been amazed for months that whoever is responsible for the physical safety of both men hasn't insisted on separating them. Now, it may be too late.

I hope no one in the administration becomes critically ill. I hope the physicians & medical experts' precautions are successful. I also hope someone in security takes charge & enforces the administration's own guidelines. Trump calls this a war. Maybe he should be holed up in the war room w/his vp in an undisclosed location.

I saw Pence on TV doing photo op the other day unloading a van of PPE at a nursing home in Alexandria, Va. Neither Pence nor anyone in the entourage (if I recall correctly) was wearing a mask nor practicing social distancing.

It was only a question of time before someone in the Trump Admin inner circle came down as positive. I've seen reports that Trump doesn't want to wear a mask as it "shows weakness". Either that or maybe he thinks he's Superman?

So, is this lead by example or instead late to the party? If I was a betting man, which I am for political bets when the odds are stacked on my side of the ledger, I'd say "late to the party".

It seems many want to make this political - 100% Trump's fault dontcha know! - when any application of recent findings and reason would argue that unless we had sealed up the country back in November to vacuum tight levels, the spread was bound to happen - unstoppable and inevitable.

We're seeing stats that show a huge percentage of admissions have been from people who hunkered down at home from the start, and followed the stay-at-home orders. I just saw a new report claiming it can enter in aerosol form through the eyes (logical, as fluids there mix into sinuses). People are running around with dust and cloth masks, none which will stop the virus because those can't stop the particle size necessary to make a difference.

So how was anyone supposed to put in place NASA-level clean room standards, total lockdown of the country's borders, require N95 or better masks for 335 million Americans, and stop 100% of the people from entering who might have the virus, way back before it started? Even the simplest application of scientific reason and common sense principles says that level of control is impossible.

Blame whatever politician makes you feel good. We all need to vent from time to time - its good sport. But just like every other virus, the spread is unstoppable and the majority will get infected no matter what anyone does. Then their immune systems will protect 99.9%. Hard math for those that succumb, but part of human evolution, regardless of who is in charge.

Too little, too late. If they're just testing positive now, they've been in contact w/any number of people during the incubation period of up to 14 days.

Maybe if Trump knew basic civics & that Pelosi was #2 in line to succeed him should he become incapacitated, he'd have moved a little faster.

It would have happened whoever was president, no doubt.
we would have been better prepared. I have little doubt that any other president would not have said this will go away like a miracle, etc. But that's been all said before.

the people who were locked up at home were with people who weren't. Or they went the store, touched something, and rubbed their face

Mask mostly prevent transmission - they keep your neighbor safe more than they keep you safe. We've learned you can be contagious and not know it. If everyone wore masks, the chance of anyone spreading it goes way down.

I don't thing anyone in this forum has said COVID-19 was Trump's fault. No one blames Trump for a pandemic that started in China, ravished Europe, & leapt here.

He HAS taken criticism for not heeding warnings from experts in Fall 2019. His 1st big step was to stop travel from China which was applauded by the entire country.

Trump is president. As such, he should invoke privileges after deliberation w/experts, set a calm tone, and lead by example. Unfortunately, his aversion to science has led him or his staff not to follow the guidelines his own administration set.

This thread is about COVID-19 running amok in the WH - nowhere else - the WH. Trump is not responsible for de-sanitizing his home & workplace. The Secret Service & other agencies are charged w/protecting him & his vp & keeping them physically safe. His doctors monitor his health.

For reasons that defy protocol in any crisis or "war against an invisible enemy," Trump & Pence are constantly in the same building, same room, same meeting, same platform standing far less than 6' apart. This isn't a Trump failure. This is a deadly virus that was once believed to affect only those over 60. Trump is 73 & Pence is 60 - high risk groups. Steps should've been taken immediately to keep the two leaders separated. That still hasn't been done. Whoever is in charge of their physical safety has failed them.

Trump sees masks as a weakness & chooses not to wear one. That's fine as long as he's isolated in the Oval Office watching TV. The First Lady wears a mask & has done 2 PSAs on wearing them. Pence & the remaining staff at the WH should be following the administration guidelines - wearing masks, distancing, hand washing & telecommuting if they're not essential. They're not. Someone - whose job it is to protect the pres & vp - is failing ALL of those in the WH by not enforcing the administration's own guidelines. Trump & Pence are now both at an even higher risk than they were just due to age.

Take your attempt to politicize a thread that is about COVID-19 in Trump's home & workplace elsewhere. No one is talking about closed borders or distributing N95 masks to the American populace. The deadly virus is now in the WH & people very close to America's highest office holders who are already in an at-risk group.

Maybe you don't get it - but Trump & Pence could both become sick. It has happened to Boris Johnson, Prince Charles, Prince Albert, Canada's First Lady, and leaders & lawmakers in Russia, Germany, Australia, Iran, Brazil, Ireland, Norway, & Spain. US congressmen have it. Leaders in Italy have died.

This is the ONE thread that is apolitical. No one wants Trump to become incapacitated or worse. Ditto for Pence. If you can't comprehend that, you probably shouldn't be posting at all.

Go into the store wearing your mask and gloves. Have on a long sleeve shirt (light cotton). Spray some Lysol on your clothes before you enter. Keep the can in your hands.
If someone starts to diss you, come close to you without their "protection" on, or fuss about your mask, hold up your can of Lysol, tell the person to stay back or you will disinfect them, while holding a lighter in the other hand and declaring that Lysol is good, but a Lysol flamethrower disinfects better.

OR, if they get too close without "protection", call the local police and charge the person with attempted murder.

Note: Surprising how socially accepting it is now to ask : "You got protection?"

If you watched today's presser with the Apprentice Prez, you'd hear him accuse President Obama of crimes. It was like watching Comedy Central. The more he was pushed, the more he sounded like an incompetent buffoon. You can't make this stuff up. And this is the guy who 40 some pct still believe in and will vote for.

Trump Accuses Obama Of A Crime In White House Press Briefing

https://www.forbes.com/sites/andrewsolender/2020/05/11/trump-accuses-obama- of-a-crime-in-white-house-press-briefing/#c1d70e663e8e

Here are 2 paragraphs of the article. Trump is the personification of leadership.

"Referring to his tweet on Sunday accusing Obama of “the biggest political crime in American history, by far,” Washington Post reporter Philip Rucker asked Trump, “What crime exactly are you accusing President Obama of committing and do you believe the Justice Department should prosecute him?”

Trump replied, “Obamagate. it’s been going on for a long time. It’s a disgrace that it happened. And if you look at what’s gone on and if you look at now all of this information that’s being released, and from what I understand that’s only the beginning, some terrible things happened.”

If I had thought it through further, I probably would have realized that our prez got it right with Obamagate. No doubt he is on to something. If he says it, then it must be true. In the next few weeks it will all become apparent. It will be as clear as the fake birth certificate that Birther Trump dug up with his investigators and showed to all of America. Well...I think some people are going to hold alliance with the President against some of these people. I think Task Force members have shown leadership (Girior, Adams and even Pence), but Trump's presence hangs over them. For instance, CDC and HHS should be more out front on this, but the cloud of Trump and the controlling ego of Trump tends to silence or put them in the backseat. Mnuchin has been out front trying to get things done, although there have been execution issues with the plans. In fairness to him, trying to organize a massive loan and grant program in one week that might take several months in normal times is going to have bumps and hangups.

It seems the FDA might've led too much, if that makes sense. Allowing anti-body test manufacturers to self-validate has led to much uncertainty on what anti-body tests are good, which ones aren't, are any of them? No doubt Trump pushed them to loosen any and every regulation possible to open the flood gates for lowering PPE certification, to tests, to guidance on off label medication usage. Now, to a point, some of that has been necessary due to circumstance we find ourselves in and then some of it has been counterproductive.

So did Katie Miller show symptoms Friday or not?

I've read and heard it reported both ways.

At first it seems she showed symptoms Friday that prompted a test. Now more people are reporting it as she was asymptomatic and got a test.

Matters a little for setting up arguments and positions. Erin Burnett lead her show off stating how Katie Miller would not have gotten tested anywhere else in the country because she didn't show symptoms. But if she did show symptoms she would be able to get tested in most places in the country.

At any rate, think about it, if she did have symptoms and came to work at the White House - man. Even me, I've probably had about a dozen times where I felt weird or thought I was warm or sore throat and got paranoid only to find my temperature to be fine or whatever I thought was wrong with me goes away. But I don't work at the White House either. If you feel stick, stay home right. On Thursday, supposedly, according to a Las Vegas Journal reporter Miller coughed and then quipped "I don't have Coronavirus". Actually....ya did.

Thinking about your question a little more crazyjoe, I think I would pin Jerome Powell as exhibiting the most leadership related to coronavirus. Not exactly part of the "Trumpty Administration" but he was appointed by Trump (and often villainized by Trump).

Wonder if Trump still stands behind his "99% of cases are totally harmless" now that it's in his son's bedroom. Kimberly Guilfoyle, party-changer-for-a-rich-man & current girlfriend of Don Jr, has tested positive after interacting w/hundreds of GOP attendees at fundraisers pre-Mt. Rushmore. They're both in isolation. Both photographed w/o masks.

No doubt the 99% harmless comment is meant to dismiss the seriousness of the virus in typical downplayed Trump fashion - which many of his supporters still repeat that it's not really that big of a deal.

I wonder what the actual numbers would be...I have dropped out of the news cycle for the most part and am not reading much news, but has anyone broken down % of mild, almost undetectable cases, moderate cases, severe cases, catastrophic cases? Sure Trump pulled the 99% number out of his ass, but there may be some high % of cases that do end up relatively harmless.

The more people tested, the crazier the #s/panic get

A full shutdown enforced by martial law? Is that next? Where would that leave the democracy?
One step away from fascism/totalitarianism, that’s where

It’s time America pulled up its bootstraps, sneered at this thing & said, “We’re going to reopen - we realize people can’t be 6 feet apart All of the time, that was unrealistic & a bad idea, so since social distancing hasn’t worked we’re going to reopen - people can continue to wear mask/sanitize hands/maintain safe social distance.....” etc

The annual 4th of July village parade this past Saturday succumbed to it, the running of the bulls in Spain has also - this is not the American way, just accepting that CV= a butt kicking & best to close up shop, run & hide - It Hasn’t Worked

if reopening means millions of Americans dead in the next few years b/c they to the beach/out to eat or a concert/ballgame, so be it - martial law would have no effect at all on that

A strain of the bubonic plague, which killed some 50M Europeans back in the day, has been diagnosed in China - read that this morning online

Agreed and wouldn't it be something if the people who tested positive in the WH, never showed symptoms?

I, too, have stopped reading all but the minimum to be aware of what's going around me, but the Guilfoyle positive test (& non-disclosure re Jr) was hard to miss. The CDC seems to track hospitalizations where patients require oxygen/ICU & that's about 20-30%. They also track deaths which seems to be about 10%.

Trump's apparently decided his election strategy is to ignore Covid19 even when it affects his family. He freaked out when his long time friend died a few months ago & ordered changes in protocols in the WH when his valet & 2 on Pence's staff tested positive. Now, his advance team for Tulsa plus Secret Service agents are testing positive & he's downplaying it. There's no scientific support that 99% of cases are "harmless."

"Harmless" quite vague. Does this include the 0.004% who've died? What if we dropped that 99% number down to....85%?..Would that make it more like the Flu?
