Hey, trying to think this over, not smart enough, no time right now. What if we demanded an end to the Party system and we started electing our leaders strictly on merit?? It wouldn't work, total chaos??........Peace........joe..........might see some real quality leaders coming out of our communities?

As I see it - as I've seen it for quite some time - the two biggest problems with American politics are Republicans and Democrats.

Amen. And to Joe's proposition, Vote them ALL out. Select candidates who've never held office before on every level....

Maybe one day, you can reply to any post while managing to keep your hatred for the President on the sidelines.

Not gonna happen, but hey

I grew up in Madison WI and the Mayoral race was always open: top 2 candidates from the primary squared off head-to-head, regardless of party. Madison is pretty liberal, so it was always a Democrat vs a more liberal Democrat, but it was much more representative because a Republican basically never has a chance - why waste their time and money on a lost cause?

WI also has open primaries, so you could vote for which ever candidate in whatever party you felt like voting for. It's a much better system, because if you don't affiliate as an R or a D in most states, you can't participate in the primaries. Of course, as the WI primary occurs this week after most candidates have dropped, I'm not sure how much participation they can claim (I think most if not all primaries should happen on the same day, not over the course of a season)

I couldn't agree more with ending the power that the political parties in this nation have taken upon themselves....When I say political parties I mean of course the Repubs. and the Dems. Since they're really the only two that matter.

A good start would be term limits for Congress and the Supreme court. Two four year terns for both the Senate and the House members, and one 15 year term for a supreme court justice.

These steps are only a start of course.....

Whatís a quality leader? People donít all want the same things.

IMO, itís not that itís two parties too many, itís that we donít have enough parties. If there were more parties, the procedural rules in Congress would have to change. Currently itís wired as a strict majority-minority of two sides.

The Canadian system allows for more access whereby the more votes parties get, the more seats those parties get in the House of Commons. Seems to work well. Our House is based on representation by population, is that a better way, or not?

Then, the Senate. Is it big enough? Are six year terms too long?

Six year terms are fine if they're limited to say, two terms. A big part of the problem are the career legislators who hang around for 20, 30, even 40 years!
