This Is the Entire 2020 Election in One Screenshot
by Tim Miller April 1, 2020 12:27 pm

On February 5, Democratic Senator Chris Murphy left a Trump administration briefing on the Coronavirus and fired off a tweet: “Bottom line. They aren’t taking this seriously enough…Local health systems need supplies, training, screening staff.”
On March 9 Donald Trump—with access to an additional month’s worth of data and intelligence—fired off a tweet of his own…comparing the virus to the flu and suggesting that “life and the economy go on.”

That’s it. That’s the Democrats’ case for November.
Sure there will be plenty of sturm und drang and controversy along the way.
People will argue about the Supreme Court and tax rates and climate change and foreign policy.
Joe Biden will point to his January 27 op-ed on how Trump is the “worst possible leader” to deal with a pandemic and his own plan to combat coronavirus through the fall and winter. He’ll bring Obama on the campaign trail. Talk about how Obamacare was a big effing deal. He’ll call people Jack. He’ll run hundreds of millions of dollars worth of ads emphasizing his empathy and competence.
Donald Trump will invoke Hunter Biden and socialism and Hillary’s emails and the Crime Bill and Hunter Biden again and he’ll call him Sleepy China Joe and he’ll meme Biden sniffing women’s hair and talk about how great the economy was before the invisible foreign enemy that nobody could have predicted came ashore just to ruin his presidency while he was fighting off the impeachment witch hunt hoax.
He’ll demonize immigrants and run Facebook ads attacking the free healthcare Joe wants to give to the caravan of Wuhan Flu infected Chinese ISIS members about to cross the border any minute now.
But in the end this will be a country decimated by a pandemic. Tens of thousands of Americans will be dead. International travel will be a distant memory. If we are incredibly lucky, we’ll have an economy that is slowly rebounding, but there will still be millions of people suffering increased financial hardship.
With pain and devastation at that scale, nothing else is going to break through. The election will hinge on one question: Did Donald Trump do everything a president should have done to keep America safe from the pandemic?
So for Trump, that means he’ll have to convince the country that there’s an American resurrection taking place. (No longer happening on Easter Sunday.) It’s a complicated argument that depends on having favorable facts on the ground and avoiding any responsibility for the disaster in the first place.

Nothing complicated. There’s really not much more to say. The president had all the information about the threat of the virus at his fingertips in February. The Democrats said he wasn’t taking this threat seriously and pressed him into action. It’s all right there, in their own words, with time stamps and everything.
Instead of acting Trump spent over a month live tweeting cable news and retweeting crackpot science takes from the actor James Woods.
You can dig through other people’s attempts to defend Trump until they turn into a corncob but what happened is right there, clear as day, in one screen shot.
This is not to say that Donald Trump will lose and Joe Biden will win. Things happen. A rally around the flag effect could spur the incumbent to victory. The Russians or Chinese could put their fingers on the scale. Or the virus could still be prevalent enough that voting is hard, turnout is scrambled, and the results are a crapshoot.
But the frame and the discussion of why our country had such pain inflicted on it will overwhelm any other case to be made against either candidate. And the campaign battlelines have already been drawn. The case against Trump is this:
“Bottom line: They aren’t taking this seriously enough.”

H/T Bulwark

There was also a distraction called impeachment. He helped China during their outbreak while still dealing with global issues. I know you don't know about the missiles being fired at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia one of our strategic partners from Yemen, troubles in Iraq [protests at the American embassy], threats from the Iranians, the Afghan Peace Agreement hiccups etc. I have been solely focusing on Covid-19 because it is a pandemic. Trump as President has to deal with everything, everywhere. Not an easy task for Americas Project Manager. And he has to keep our economy afloat while closing businesses and ordering people to stay home. And yes he has to also campaign for re-election all at the same time.

Not to mention his 9 rallies and 6 golf trips this year. Yup, lots of distractions.

Gina, I disagree with You defending what I consider a vile, vile "human being" whom is beyond all defense, not to mention his disgusting and criminal family and administration. He's a turd with ears. Things have gotten pretty ruff around here, I myself have been called out for excessive displays of hatred (only toward the evil orange one and his zombie minions) of which I plead guilty and am trying to do better and excessive belligerence, of which I plead innocent!! Thanks for Your courage still getting into the fray with us here..........Peace......joe

So, you're parroting Mitchell McConnell's attempts to distance himself & the administration from their dereliction of duty. The impeachment trial was a necessary act of Congress that didn't require Trump's participation. It last exactly 2 weeks IN THE AFTERNOONS from January 16, weekends off, & a vote to acquit on February 5.

Any "distraction" was Trump's own meddling in threatening witnesses, tweeting commentary, & conducting rallies. The fact that he paid no attention to the warnings he'd received in early January (& from within in October, 2019) had nothing to do w/impeachment.

Trump, Feb. 26: "This is a flu. This is like a flu."

Trump, today: "It's not the flu. It's vicious."

The strong leader we need in these troubled times.

The US was probably prepared for a tropical storm, to use an analogy. Unfortunately the path shifted and the storm intensified and now we are suffering from a Category 5 hit. The warnings were out there, but no one was ready to do what needed to be done which was a drop everything and make this a top priority approach. Disrupt daily life, schooling, business, travel and leisure. No other exotic disease that was hyped like bird flu, sars I is as deadly. If we look back, the Superbowl should have been canceled. Have fun sitting in the hind-sight zone and casting insults and blame, but deep down you know it would not have mattered who was in charge would have the foresight to do what needed to be done early on.

Nice try....Deep down you know your boy, to use your football analogy, fumbled the ball....BIG TIME! Try and spin his incompetence and lack of preparedness all you like but anyone not living in Trump world knows the real story.

X2

Maybe Gina & goob can speak to Trump calling this a "hoax". Was he right when he made this statement, and then it it became real, or was it always real, and he just lied as usual?

Trump said the media was playing this up to help prevent his reelection. Is this true. What numbers are played up?

Trump, as usual, accepted no responsibility and brags about his leadership and response. The buck never stops with Trump. It's always others' faults or responsibilities. This is leadership at is worst.

Surely you laddies over there in the factory can do better than this....

Your "misrepresented every aspect of this pandemic" is straight out of the Fake News rags.
Instead of biased opinion try factual information.

President Trump's swift and decisive action saved millions of lives.

Did you come up with that yourself or was that scripted reply just handed to you by your slightly more intelligent supervisor?

It sounds remarkably similar to the very same script every Trump apologist pundit, journalist, broadcaster, and now Bot has been spouting for days now. You all seem very desperate to change the narrative.

There was no "swift and decisive action" by the president. He failed to take COVID19 seriously from the start.

These are just through mid Marsh.

President Trump's swift and decisive action back in January to ban flights from China is universally recognized as exactly the right thing to do and has saved millions of lives.
The left's bloviating has contributed nothing to help anyone.

How many people in your state have yet to take any precautions?... I live in Northern AZ and half the State is still traveling like it was vacation time.

Who do you blame for that behavior?

Exactly.

Have never seen that word b4 - bloviated - great one! - bloviate, to “talk at length, in an empty or inflated way”

Thanks!

Can’t stick a fork in that wily ol bird just yet Mark, still too early - imho he has a lot of general middle-America support out there - if it was tmrw or next week & not Nov., I think he’d outpoll Biden - what’s the old saying, it’s the few, who squawk....the loudest

NO, They BLOVIATE! It’s too bomb learning a new word

Our first case and South Korea's first case happened on the same day. The number of infected and dead in South Korea is a fraction of ours. When Biden is writing an op-ed in USA Today on January F#####g 27 warning us about a pandemic and Dem. Sen. Coons is saying on Feb. 5 that he just attended a White House briefing and he immediately says they aren't taking this seriously the campaign ads write themselves. Hunter Biden anyone?

I guess since it was a report on Trump spreading false information, so I guess it can be considered Fake News...if you consider Trump's own words as news. I consider them lies, but some consider them news I guess.

Anyone who thinks Trump was on top of the Coronavirus issue from the start does not live in reality.

The one thing he did do early was the China travel ban. At least one of our forum members critical of Trump gave him credit for that. The problem was what happened after that was opportunity lost.

Azar declared a national health emergency 1/31 but said “risk remained low” probably because Trump told him to. HHS and the CDC were aware throughout a January but no meaningful actions were taken other than the travel ban to contain or prepare making February essentially a wasted month. We had tests February 5th, but the tests were faulty. A critical failure, which wasn’t directly Trump’s fault it was just an unfortunate timing. Fact remains CDC wasn’t prepared for widespread testing. Maybe the people no longer with the pandemic team knew this? Were there efforts to fix this before they were “disbanded’?

If the pandemic team had not been reorganized and deemphasized our response could’ve been better around the edges but I believe the core issue would still be very problematic, widespread and deadly. Unless we would’ve taken the kinds of things we did in March several weeks earlier. Without signs of outbreak here I also believe the US public would’ve balked and resisted such actions. South Korea is way different.

South Korea has the benefit of prior health epidemics to draw from, they know these threats are real. This generation in our country was rather oblivious to the threat. South Korea started testing people, forcibly, a week before they had a single confirmed case. How would that have gone over here? South Korea tracks people and discloses private information publicly, something that would violate civil liberties and privacy rights here.

Our preparedness and early response could’ve been better, but we never would’ve done what South Korea did no matter who was President.

And finally, much time was wasted when China didn’t disclose the new virus for at least a month (some reports say their first case was mid November). Consider that as of January 23rd the WHO said it was ‘not yet a public health emergency’. Just 1 week later they declared a ‘global health emergency’ showing that things can change fast. Had China not put secrecy ahead of safety everything could’ve been ramped up earlier. Just as if Trump had put urgency ahead of politics everything here could’ve ramped up earlier.

Many things contributed to where we are. We can’t control China, we should be able to control our preparedness and response, it’s rightful to find fault with Trump, his own quotes bury him. On the other hand it can’t be boiled down so simply to all his fault, lots of factors were at play here.

I was in Hong Kong and Macau in December and there was already talk of the virus and it was obvious preparations were being made. I flew through the Beijing airport in the first week of January and my wife and I were discussing the virus as we sat in the airport. Maybe China wasn't as transparent as it should have been, but it was obvious to anybody who reads the news that this was extremely serious prior to Christmas. Other countries had tests ready. It was obvious that should there be an outbreak in the US, ventilators would be in short supply. I would hope that had we had a pandemic team such as the one Trump eliminated we would be in better shape right now. I will give Trump credit for the flight ban he put in place from China. That was a somewhat gutsy move that was necessary. But his downplaying the seriousness of the virus for so long is still having negative implications and took another bite out of any credibility he might have left

The YouTube video of the speech proves President Trump never called the coronavirus a hoax.
He called the Democrats and Fake News politicizing it their new hoax which is exactly what it is.

Well, it did show that? The video also showed that our President is also a semi-cognisent imbecile? Barely capable of linking full thoughts and sentences together! I'm putting his IQ with what normal range 70-135? I give him a 72............Peace.....Lay Low....Try not to let people around You....joe

First off, I wanted to say I am glad to have seen you around the forum a little more lately, you along with a handful of others make discussions better regardless of POV. I don't look to dispute anything you say.

The issue is that the outside world was not allowed into China early enough and in fact China tried to suppress information related to the virus. There are some conspiracy aspects about China and this virus, but their lack of transparency with the rest of the world is not in dispute.

Here is are twp excerpts from a February 7th 2020 NYT story:

quote:
Also, C.D.C. officials have said that they hope to learn more about the new coronavirus from their Chinese counterparts to improve the American response if the virus starts to spread widely here.

On Friday, Alex M. Azar II, secretary of health and human services, said at a news briefing that he had recently reiterated the offer of a team to his Chinese counterpart, Dr. Ma Xiaowei.

Asked what the holdup was, he answered: “It’s up to the Chinese. We continue to expect fully that President Xi will accept our offer. We're ready and willing and able to go.”

quote:
The two fields in which China appears to need outside help, experts said, are molecular virology and epidemiology.

The first involves sequencing the virus’s genome and manipulating it to refine diagnostic tests, treatments and vaccine candidates.

The second involves figuring out basic questions like who gets infected and who does not, how long the incubation period is, why some victims die, how many other people each victim infects and how commonly hospital outbreaks are occurring.

“This isn’t rocket science, it’s basic stuff — but it’s been five weeks and we still don’t know the answers,” one expert said.

It would be very useful, for example, to have a blood test for antibodies. That would make it possible to see how many infected people had recovered, which would make it clearer as to how lethal the virus is — and how widespread.

WHO's team wasn't allowed in China until February 10th.

True, the US lost time and was not prepared. And had China allowed global and US health experts in earlier we'd be in a better place. Both things are true.
