Taken 11-23-94, Cotton Club in Atlanta, billed as Derek Trucks w special guests. I was there, after having seen him sit in w/ the ABB in '93.

My friend took this, mailed it to Derek, who signed it and mailed it back. Pretty impressive that someone so young would do that, but not surprising w/ what we now know.

Anyone know who the other guy is?

It kinda looks like Todd Smallie but I'm not sure.

At first I thought the other guy is the guy playing the blue guitar in this video, but I'm really not certain. If it is, this may at least help answer your question:

Derek had a 2nd guitarist in the DTB up until about 1994 or 1995. I've forgotten his name though, and the DTB wikipedia entry pretty much ignores the band's history from before the time Yonrico Scott or Bill McKay joined the band. DTB had a 2nd guitarist, a different keyboard player, and went through a few different drummers before Rico joined the band.

I believe the 2nd guitarist got a co-writing credit on the song "Allright" off the Out of the Madness CD. But I can't find the songwriting credit online anywhere (interestingly that's the only song on the CD that All Music Guide omits songwriting credit).

Larry Oates. Lineup listed at the very bottom in the "Notes" section: http://archive.org/details/dtb1994-11-23.shnf

I think in 1993 Derek was still touring as Derek & the Dominators, which had a different lineup than when he launched the first "Derek Trucks Band" in 1994. Hophead is the expert here, so maybe he will chime in, but I believe the Dominators lineup was: Derek, Danny Roberts, Randy Scott, Derick Hess & Bobby Crawford.

Thank you Zambi. Didn't mean to put you or anyone to work on this!

No "work" at all. I love that sort of trivia, and it was one of those things where I thought his name was on the tip of my tongue and it was killing me. Turns out what I had in mind was wrong, b/c I wasn't thinking of Larry Oates. Might've been the keyboard player (Ron Volker) I was thinking of who got the co-credit on "Allright" on Out of the Madness. I don't have the CD sleeve readily available and can't seem to find it anywhere online - part of the conspiracy of erasing the band's history pre-McKay/pre-Rico. J/k

After seeing Derek sit in with the ABB at Lakewood in Atlanta in 1992 and 1993, I didn't see the Derek Trucks Band until Music Midtown in 1995, at which point Yonrico Scott and Bill McKay had joined I'm pretty certain.

I saw the dTb a handful of times around Atlanta at Festivals etc (+Derek in Frogwings in Dec '97) until Kofi joined in 1999. That's the point I really jumped on board. Getting world class lead vocals from Javier in 2000 then Mattison in 2002 completed them, to my ears.

I don't think they ever got the exact mix of songs / formula perfect on a studio release, with their final one being my favorite, though. I suspect that original Joyful Noise record with Javier would have been it but alas he parted when they were 80% done with the album...

If anyone ever gets the original tracks For My Brother, Kam-A-Lay, Like Anyone Else, Big Salsa, Joyful Noise (without Javier turned down it the mix) with Javier, I'd LOVE to hear them.

Here's an even earlier Derek Trucks pic. Exhausted from rehearsels from his first Headliner US South-East tour:

Clearly that picture is a fake - the baby does not have a slide on his left ring finger.

Saw Gregg bring Derek out for a guest spot at a GA show, and he looked just like that. Nobody knew who he was, thought "how cute" and then jaws dropped when he played. I had no clue who he was, but said in my infinite wisdom: "That kid is gonna be somebody someday".
