Graphic designer Storm Thorgerson has died at the age of 69, his family have confirmed.

The visionary behind some of the most memorable album covers of all time had been fighting cancer.

He’s remembered for his eye-catching work with design firm Hipgnosis from the 1960s until its closure in 1983, and then with his freelance collective Storm Studios.

Among his works are Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon, Atom Heart Mother and Wish You Were Here; Black Sabbath’s Technical Ecstasy; The Cult’s Electric; Bruce Dickinson’s Skunkworks; and covers for Dream Theater, Genesis, Anthrax, Audioslave, Muse and many others.

As a video director he created Floyd’s Learning To Fly and High Hopes; Yes’ Owner Of A Lonely Heart; Robert Plant’s Big Log; and Bruce Dickinson’s Tattooed Millionare, among others.

In 2011 he observed: “I’ve probably done too many album covers for some people’s liking.” In the video below he says: “I’m described by some as difficult to work with, by others as a ponce, by some as a narcissist with an ego the size of a small planet – by very few as handsome as sexy, which is how I see myself.”

Thorgerson’s family said last night: “He had been ill for some time, though he had made a remarkable recovery from his stroke in 2003.

“He is survived by his mother Vanji, his son Bill, wife Barbie Antonis and her two children Adam and Georgia.”

Floyd guitarist David Gilmour said: “We first met in our early teens. We would gather at Sheep’s Green, a spot by the rive in Cambridge, and Storm would always be there holding forth, making the most noise, bursting with ideas and enthusiasm. Nothing has ever really changed.

“He has been a constant force in my life, both at work and in private, a shoulder to cry on and a great friend. I will miss him.”

Storm has such a recognizable art form and mood. going through his portfolio, i see works that i have seen for years and it makes complete sense that he did them.

for me, he helped create the setting, mood and atmosphere for pink floyd. or maybe he ust perfectly captured it. regardless, i'm still transfixed by the division bell artwork. it's slightly haunting.

Love his cover art and graphic design. I have a very nice photo book written by himself about his body of work and enjoy reading his humourous accounts. RIP Storm!

Funny detail for this eleborate and expensive photo-shoot for Pink Floyd: no trick photography. Every bed is real!

I always thought that the guy in this photo was a Syd Barrett look-a-like ... don't know if that was intentional ...
