just saw this on steve cropper's facebook page:
Today I lost my best friend, the World has lost the best guy and bass player to ever live. Duck Dunn died in his sleep Sunday morning May 13 in Tokyo Japan after finishing 2 shows at the Blue Note Night Club.

Oh No!!!! What awful news. Donald "Duck" Dunn was one of my iconic Bass Players of all time.
What a loss to Blues/ R&B, and Music altogether. So saddened. RIP Duck... ____________________

Man, this is depressing. It's been a rough year for deaths in the music world so far.
Think of all the classic Stax soul records that Duck Dunn played bass on.
Worked with Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Blues Brothers, and on and on...
He was also good friends with Levon Helm (and played in Levon Helm's RCO All Stars).
How sad that he passes away less than a month after his friend Levon did.
I'll be listening to my Booker T & the MGs box set, "Time is Tight," all day Sunday in his honor.

Awful news indeed. Looks like the Grim Reaper is working overtime in 2012 so far. Another legend passed away. Saw him with Booker T & the MGs and with Neil Young. The Blues Brothers is one of my all time favorite movies. "Fortunally" he passed away peacefully in his sleep so i hope he was in no pain or sucumbing to a long painful disease.
RIP Dick Dunn! Probably planning his first jam session in Heaven right now. Rock on! ____________________

RIP, Donald "Duck" Dunn. Thank you so much for laying it down with supreme taste, economy, and soulfulness for over fifty years. It wouldn't be much of an exaggeration to say that you played on something like half of my favorite records from the 1960s.
Jesus Christ, what is going on this year? So many legends being taken away from us. This is beyond painful, just bewilderingly sad.
One of the most difficult aspects of Growing Older is watching your heroes die.

Legendary Session Bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn Passes Away at 70
Details are sketchy at this time but, according to a Facebook post by Steve Cropper, legendary sessions bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn passed away Sunday morning in Tokyo.
A page has already been put up on Facebook saluting Dunn, "A place for fans, friends, and others to share their messages of support or respect for those who cared for such an incredible person..."
Dunn grew up in Memphis, a close friend in childhood with Cropper. In their teens, Dunn and Cropper formed the group the Royal Spades with Dunn on guitar, Cropper on bass, future Memphis Horns player Wayne Jackson on trumpet, Charlie Freeman on guitar, Terry Johnson on drums, Don Nix on baritone saxophone, Charles "Packy" Axton on saxophone, John "Smoochy" Smith on keyboards and Ronnie Angel on vocals.
At the urging of Axton's mother, who owned Satellite Records, they changed their name to the Mar-Keys and, in 1961, went to number 2 on the R&B and 3 on the pop charts with Last Night. Dunn left soon after to play with Ben Branch's Big Band but would return to the rock charts in 1964 when he replaced original bassist Lewie Steinberg in Booker T. & the M.G.'s.
Dunn, along with the Memphis Horns and drummer Al Jackson, Jr., also became the house band for Stax Records, playing on such big hits as Respect and I Can't Turn You Loose by Otis Redding, In the Midnight Hour by Wilson Pickett and Hold On, I'm Coming by Sam & Dave.
Booker T. & the M.G.'s also continued to branch out from their original Memphis sounds on albums throughout the 60's and 70's. Dunn also became a major session player on his own for everyone from Eric Clapton to Bob Dylan to Stevie Nicks and was a regular member of the Blues Brothers Band and appeared as himself in both Blues Brothers movies.
Dunn went into a semi-retirement in the middle of the last decade but continued to play occasional M.G.'s shows along with special shows.

| Very sad news! He's definitely one of my favorite bass players. I think most blues and rock bassists spent time trying to copy his bass playing. He died after playing 2 shows in one night in Tokyo. At the age of 70 with jet lag, that must be hard on the body to have to put on 2 shows. ____________________

Another great lost. One hell of a jam session going on in heaven. I thank God every morning for another day but my fear of death is diminishing as I age; hey, no one gets out alive anyway and if you have faith in the hereafter, there's some damn good company. ____________________

Man, this one hurts. Duck is right up there with BO as my favorite bass players. RIP, Duck - well, at least one of the greatest rhythm sections ever is reunited - Duck and Al Jackson.

My late Father in Law was a big band trumpet player (and damn good from what I heard of his recordings). We bonded over our mutual love of music and we spent many an evening in his den with him telling me wonderful stories of his days as a musician.
One thing that he told me which mirrors what Killing Floor wrote above is that you will reach a point in your life sooner than later, when you will quickly start to lose more and more of your musical heroes as "musicians do not take good care of themselves and it comes back to haunt them a lot sooner than you want it to."
He was a disiplained man so he did not sucumb to the kinds of temptations that are common for musicians and we were able to keep him with us for many years after his retirement.
But he saw that first hand with many close musician friends and I could see how it hurt him from the way he talked about it .
I am not saying that is the case here but I think about what he once told me every time we lose a musical hero.
And yes...there have been too many this year already.
RIP Donald "Duck" Dunn. You were truly one of the greats ...

Duck Dunn was truly one of the all-time greats, and seemed like a cool guy too. RIP.
One of my favorite moments at Jazz Fest in New Orleans was a smoking hot version of the Booker T and the MGs classic "Green Onions" played by B-3 master Ike Stubblefield, guitarist Grant Green Jr., drummer Terrence Higgins and trombone player Wycliffe Gordon.
That song has one of the greatest grooves EVER, and Duck Dunn helped create it. For that alone, surely there is a special place for him in heaven.

Of all of the real autographs I have, Dunn's ranks the top three.
Al Jackson And the "Duck". The reason I came to love the rhythm section of a band.
