Looks like Dickey returns to Europe!

I wonder if more dates will be added. Some excellent Blues and rock festivals in july.

Bring on more dates!

If he can't manage to show up in Atlanta or Macon to play a gig he is booked for I find it very hard to believe that he will show up in Europe.

For your sake I hope I'm wrong, but based on his track record I'd contain your excitement. I'd give it about a 10% chance he honors that date.

That is pretty harsh. You make it sound like Dickey only shows up to 10% of his shows. Dickey has no history of bailing out on booked shows unless you know something I don't. You make it sound as if he never shows. Unbelieveable the amount of negativity that is directed at this man. Dickey like all of us may have some faults but not showing isn't one of his.

ABBDutch and others are excited and looking forward to some potential shows. Can't they be given a chance to enjoy the news before it's shot down.

His attendance record has been less than stellar - 10 - 15% cancel rates would get me fired for sure

In my fellow Atlantan's defense, let's look at the last 4 GS shows in Atlanta that were booked and tix sold:

5/07, Wild Bill's. Dickey showed, and so did I.
9/08, 2 shows at the Fred Brown Amphitheatre, canceled for "personal reasons" 2-3 weeks before the shows.
11/11, Wild Bill's. I had my tickets and it was canceled, no reason given.

So, that's a 25% show rate. Factor in that now he must cross a whole ocean as opposed to a single state line, and 10% might therefore be a fair estimation from our perspective.

Dickey did show for the Kid Rock show in '09 (?), but screw that!

None of the aforementioned facts are intended to denigrate Mr Betts in any way. They are just facts.

That is 25% using the exact dates that he cancelled. Pick just one show and that number could be 100% but would hardly prove anything. The dates are convienient but only a small sample of shows played. To get an accurate number then you have to use all dates. I know that won't work to try and portray him as a performer with a reputation for no-shows but it would be reality. Try using the actual number of shows which Dickey has done. Your percentage isn't quite as impressive that way.

I hope Dickey makes it across the pond and gives these guys some great shows.

These are the only shows with which I am familiar as an Atlantan. I'm not out to build a complete case study, but feel free to offer facts of your own.

All I know is that he's canceled 3 of 4 GS shows offered in the last nearly 5 yrs here (there were no others in that time period), and it likely explains where Ryan was coming from too. It certainly rebuts the patently unbelievable statement that "Dickey has no history of bailing out on booked shows..."

But I agree, I hope Mr Betts performs in Europe, and that many there get to see a legend. Further, I will buy tix if he schedules here again. TM is quite good about prompt refunds, so I'm not really taking much of a chance.

I haven't seen Dickey since 2004 outside of Detriot. The last three times I was gonna see him since then, the shows were cancelled.

Facts are facts as people have said. Not ripping on the guy but geez, does he want fans?

CanadianMule,

Ryan Belair has nothing but love for Dickey Betts as anyone who knows him can testify. He like others of us in Georgia don't feel like Dickey has a very good track record of appearing at concerts in recent years. As Lee stated, facts are facts. I don't track every cancellation--just the ones I was planning on attending. Like Ryan, I see Dickey every time he comes within a four hour driving radius. Unfortunately, in recent years, he cancels Georgia dates much more often than he shows. As a result, I haven't seen him play in many years now. The BBQ festival in Macon this year was particularly egregious, as he was the headliner of the entire festival and cancelled literally days before the event with zero explanation from him or management. It bankrupted the festival totally--not just for this year. It killed a Macon tradition, and it destroyed a lot of goodwill that town had for someone they considered a local hero and one of their own.

I truly hope that Dickey honors his dates for ABBDutch's sake and others. I wish Dickey Betts nothing but good will, but it's totally fair comment to say that he has a history of cancelling booked gigs at the last minute with no explanation.

I told my wife the other day that as much as I love to hear Dickey Betts play, I don't know whether I'd take the gamble again. I don't have a dog in this fight. Why would I want to unfairly smear Dickey? But if he cancels a show with no explanation, I feel it's fair to point that out. Or should we just pretend it didn't happen?

StratDal,

What's with the hatred of Macon and Atlanta? I find that totally offensive. Explain yourself, man.

In all the years of seeing DB.. I can only remember 2 incidents where the shows were cancelled but rescheduled .. it was within the last 5 yrs.. One was at Westbury L.I.N.Y. and I am not sure of the other venue..I wanna say The Concert Hall N.Y C.. it all ended up OK for me..but I can see how that would be a problem for some.
I am hoping all dates are kept and all will enjoy the DBGS.. I know I will

I'd be amazed if he does a U.K. gig.. most venues aren't interested in bands like Dickey's.
Bands like Geoff Achison couldnt find a venue in London. His manager told me he couldn't believe it. Sad but true.
From a personal point of view, I think Dickey wrote all the best ABB songs, but from what Ive seen and heard I'm not sure I'd want to go see him perform despite his legendary status in the bands history.

I stand corrected guys and my apologies to Ryan and others. There is obviously an issue for some of you down south. As I stated in my first post, I said perhaps there is something I don't know.

Just thought we should let these guys enjoy their moment. Plus Dickey is trashed endlessly on here and suprisingly I have never really seen him trashed for bailing on shows. I now realize that I probably missed those threads.

This hasn't been an issue with shows in the NE as I have never had him cancel or not show at any ofn them. I would still contend that on the whole a small percentage of shows were cancelled and without knowing the reason, I can't fully blame Dickey. But can see how you guys would feel as you do.

Again my apologies to all. You guys clearly have a reason to feel as you do.

Still hope that Dickey plays for these guys and they have a great night. Some my be concerned with how Dickey would play. I can only speak for myself but since his parting with the ABB, I have seen plenty of shows where Dickey was real good.

No need to apologize CM; we've all had our experiences good or bad. I've had both with the man. It's just that when a band cancels on you mulitple times, well you tend to lose interest.

And I have seen some amazing Dickey shows. Saw him a few weeks after the fax in 2000. Mark May was his other guitarist. Best shows were with Dan Toler. Man that guy can play!

All good, I just wouldn't travel to see him anymore based on my experiences.

Michael, Brock, and Lee thanks for saving me the time of writing the post.

I apprieciate the apology Candian Mule.

Obviously I am personally disappointed with Dickey's inability to show up for scheduled dates. My point in pointing this out to the European contingent was that they might be best to contain their excitement abit because their is a good chance Dickey doesn't show up. As I said before I hope Dickey shows for y'all and puts on a great show.

Brock you forgot the 11/13 Macon show that Michael pointed out. So he appeared at 1 of the last 5 shows he had scheduled in Atlanta...20%. The last one he made it to was in 2007. I based my 10% statement on the fact that he also has to deal with taking the band all the way to Europe instead of just driving north on I-75, surely that lowers the odds on him showing up.

Classy post CM, but no need to apologize. I wish folks would not consider reporting facts and their impressions of any musician as "slamming." Most of us are but consumers of music, and I appreciate honesty so as to make informed decisions about who to see.

As for Dickey, who knows why he cancels a good number of shows. Whether it's him or his management or both, I have no idea, and it really does not matter why. Only that there is that risk, and knowing that kept me from being overly disappointed when he canceled last fall.

Europeans are entitled to have this info too so as to be prepared. If they want to ignore the info, that's up to them.

EDIT-Ryan, I did not forget Macon. That is not Atlanta, and since I was not sure where else GS may have actually played in GA over the last few yrs, I thought that it was better to leave that out of my analysis.

Totally understandable Ryan and I never really meant it as personal anyway. You have always been a solid member here. I honestly never knew it was such an issue but can easily see that for some areas it is.

Move North! dickey shows up.

I reacted for the obvious Dickey bashing reasons. Plus ABBDutch had posted the thread about negativity on here a while ago and within a couple of posts, it seemed like it was there again. Felt sorry for our Dutch buddy!

I stand corrected. It doesn't happen often. At least not that I will admit.

I have just been really lucky concerning Dickey it seems.

Fair enough, I understand. My original post probably came off harsher than I intended, but that is due to my disappointment with Dickey in recent years. To be honest the one show he did make it to wasn't much to rave about either. I had alot more enjoyable time sitting at a table with Kirk West, shooting the **** , than I did listening to Dickey. Which was a real disappointment because he was outstanding in his previous Atlanta performance at the Variety Playhouse which was in 2005, if I remember correctly...Dangerous Dan was still with the band, Pedro was not yet but he came out and played some guitar on Seven Turns. Dickey even played Nobody Knows. That was a great show.
