Omitted in the list above:
Taz DiGregorio (Charlie Daniels Band Keyboardist), tragically passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 12, following injuries he sustained in a car accident.
Steve Prestwich. Cold Chisel (Australia) drummer. Sudden and tragic death in January 2011 due to complications from a brain tumour. I really love Cold Chisel. They are currently touring again but it looks like only "Down Under".
Harry Muskee (Dutch Blues singer, leader of Cuby & The Blizzards).

Massive Chisel fan here. Got put onto Jimmy Barnes in the 80s by a Kiwi flatmate and Cold Chisel followed. I saw Ian Moss playing in a bar in Manly on my first visit to Australia in 94 and was so lucky to catch Chisel in Wollongong in 1998. Fantastic band who never got their just rewards IMHO. RIP Steve Prestwich!

Not sure if anyone remembers David Rea. He died a few weeks back. I used to see him play when I was young. He was credited as a writer on Mississippi Queen. He also played guitar for Gordon Lightfoot. His first album was highly promoted by Rolling Stone magazine. A big back cover spread. It was called Maverick Child. A good song which I still play at my gigs sometimes. His second album had several Grateful Dead members on it. He also had an album called By The Grace of God which had a long talking blues called David and Goliath (in the Alice's Restaurant style) |

Let me add the name of Sid Yochim, longtime (from the start) lead driver of the Charlie Daniels Band. If you ever met him and his ten gallon smile (it matched his hat) you would never forget him. RIP
"Put the money on the table, and I'll be there early to pick it up." Sid
Also, a long time friend and road manager, Rick "Crabber" Crabtree. He worked with many of the country acts back in the late 70s through the early 90s. In his sleep from cardiac arrest as he was recovering from throat cancer. He spent time with two of the hardest to manage acts in country Johnny Paycheck and Tanya Tucker. Not known to any of you, but people like Rick and Sid are the reason the acts you love make it to the stage. RIP Crabber. ____________________ " Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Rigt on. I'd like to add fiddle greats Benton Flippen and Paul David Smith, and great Nashville side musician Tom Roady as well who died on Ricky Skaggs' bus. Kenny Baker's loss, of course, was huge. ____________________ |

Mothers of Invention member Jim "Motorhead" Sherwood passed away on Sunday, Christmas Day, at the age of 69.
Sherwood was the sax player and vocals and vocal sounds effects for the Mothers and played on the Zappa albums 200 Motels, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Weasals Ripped My Flesh and We’re Only In It For The Money.
He also appeared in Zappa’s films 200 Motels, Video From Hell and Uncle Meat.
After the demise of The Mothers Sherwood occasionally got together with other ex-Mothers and performed as The Grandmothers.
Sherwood and Frank Zappa were childhood friends. They met in 1956. Jim was in the same class at school with Frank’s brother Bobby Zappa. Jim and Frank first played together in 1964 in Zappa’s very first band The Blackouts.
He joined the Mothers of Invention initially as a roadie and contributed sound effects to the first album ‘Freak Out’ in 1966. In 1967 he became a full-time member of the band.
Jim’s nickname was Motorhead, named because he was always repairing old cars, trucks and motorbikes.

Ahhhh...That sucks.
A couple of my favorite Motorhead Sherwood moments.....
1. On one of Frank's compositions (either on Lumpy Gravy or We're Only In It
For The Money), while the music is going on, Jim is talking about fixing cars
and girlfriends. Funny Stuff.
2. On the epic "King Kong," off of Uncle Meat, Jim starts ripping it up
on Sax at the 1:44 mark (Frank titled this section "As Motorhead Explains it.")
Some great avant-garde sax there.
I think with Sherwood now gone, that just leaves Estrada, Gardner, Preston
Underwood and Tripp as the surviving original Mothers.
Rest In Peace.
And thanks to everyone who added to the list of
musicians/music industry folks who passed away. I knew my
list was rather incomplete.

Wow, we lost some great ones this year. Thanks for the list! |

The great Sam Rivers passed away on 12/26. My all time favorite jazz sax player (soprano and tenor sax and piano). Sam was instrumental in the avant garde jazz scene in the 60's and 70's with his Soho loft in NYC, Studio Rivbea. Sam could bop, swing, play lush melodies and take it way outside, better than anyone. A great loss to the music world. |
