In light of the fact that I have been fired or denied employment in the past for testing positive for marijuana, I thought this article was extremely interesting. When will employers finally get a clue?

I liked it better when a couple of drinks daily were good. Agree, they are.very unfair with MJ testing.

Where there is smoke, there is fire. If there is a lot of static around intoxication in your line of work, it is best just to pay attention to the signal and stay totally sober, regardless of legal status of your drugs of choice.

Particularly medical, emergency services, fire, police, military, just go straight edge man, let the law sort itself out without you.

Ask yourself, wouldn't you be more comfortable knowing the surgeon tinkering with your innards, or the nervous cop with a shotgun making a barrel print on your back, mistaking you for a murder suspect (actually happened to me!), or the fireman making the split second decision how to rescue your kids, or whatever, wouldn't you rather have these folks samurai tai-chi razor sharp alert and able to access that last tiny reserve of energy and judgement, that even casual alcohol or pot use could possibly cloud?

So, let the law sort itself out. If you are responsible for the lives of others this matter needs to be decided in the courtroom of your own conscience.

Plenty of holes ALL over your argument. First off, The 4th Amendment to The Constitution guarantees that I not be subjected to a search WITHOUT PROBABLE CAUSE. That means that unless they have reason to suspect I am showing up for work under the influence they have NO right to look inside of my body and when they drug test me they ARE looking inside of my body. Why this is not being enforced is beyond me.

You argue that marijuana impairs my ability to do my job. I take great issue with that. Have you ever tried to work 12 hour night shifts three consecutive nights and then sleep on your night off? Try it sometime. If marijuana relaxes me enough to help me get proper rest on my nights off, and does it without any side effects, then please explain how it is impairing my ability to do my job. Quite the contrary, it is ENHANCING my ability to do my job by helping me to sleep.

That's just for starters. I'm 63 years old. I have Atrial Fibrillation and high blood pressure. Marijuana calms the A-Fib and also helps with the blood pressure because it relaxes my entire body. It also helps with the arthritic pain in my right knee. In other words, marijuana makes me healthier. If I am healthier I am a better caregiver, not a worse one.

If my mental acuity is a concern then please explain why I continue to pass the following grueling certifications, all of which have to be renewed every two years: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP). The PALS recertification is due in November, just over 2 months away. Try taking one of those classes sometime, see if you can pass one of them, and then tell me that you think my mental acuity is an issue here.

One more thing: Maybe you can explain why someone can binge drink and come to work bleary-eyed and hungover and no one is testing for THAT?

I wasn't making some big case.

You clearly have a justifiable need for marijuana. It is unfair that folks like you get weeded out with the chronic bongrippers, and that certainly needs to be fixed.

I am totally pro-pot, med and rec. Totally agree with you alcohol is really bad. Not even close to pot.

My point is completely outside "the law" or "what other people do". Point was you have to decide for yourself. Laws will always be off balance as they evolve.

All I can say is that this is an entirely 180 degree turn from your original post in this thread. I'm a bit astonished to be quite honest.

It can be over-rated too!

As far as the article, anything not natural and not in moderation can be harmful to one's self. The trick is finding out what works best for you and finding that balance. For some, certain substances from peanuts to booze and everything in between can be harmful.

For those struggling with addiction(s), I'm sure there are rough times. I hope you can stay strong and find peace.
