Jimmy Herring is the answer to a prayer for a hip jazz guitarist with balls. The prayer was first answered for me in 1998 when I saw him with Jazz Is Dead in Alexandria, VA. The prayer was answered again in 1999 when my son and I met him in Towson, MD. The prayer was answered yet again when we saw him with the Allman Brothers Band three times in 2000. Having seen Jimmy with Phil and Friends and Project Z in 2001 I can say that the ensemble that best allows his light to shine is Jazz Is Dead and Project Z. Jimmy with Derek Trucks and the Allman Brothers Band is great too.

Jimmy is a great musician. Not only does he have a great attitude, but he plays with both soul and intelligence. He is the true heir of players like Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell. I think the best Allman Brothers line up in years was the Warren and Jimmy version, when Warren was subbing for Derek. I guess the best place to hear Jimmy on record is the live Jazz is Dead album or the Project Z album.

Jazz Is Dead is some of the finest music around and almost always in my 5 disc shuffle. I've never listened to Project Z before but w/ my eyes wide opened to JID, I intend to soon.

Jimmy is AWESOME. I saw him last night, 8/14/04, at Jones Beach with THe Dead & Special guest Warren Haynes. Great show. The 2nd set was really fantastic. Jimmy just made the band sound more "Grateful". Close your eyes and you'd swear Jerry was in the house!
