THE HARTFORD YARD GOATS
had to look it up, & sure enough -- the pint-sized version of the mountain goats in Colorado -- gotta be the worst name ever, then it makes sense seeing what the 'parent' club is --
wonder when the Yard Goats play the Lake Monsters -- they're both AA

4-year deal for Marcus Smart -- it's about time

Brewers slipped a little before the break to Miami and Pittsburgh. Hopefully that changes and they can overtake the flubs.

Should be interesting to see if the Machado trade allows the Dodgers to separate themselves from the pack in the NL West.

w/2nd-tier pitching (Eduardo/Steven W./Drew P) injured, the pressure falls on the "big 3" now

he opted for early rehab this year, idea being to give the team 1 solid half-season of starts -- it begins tmrw for STEPHEN after 6 weeks off -- 6-6 so far in 13 carefully-monitored starts -- so far this year, 80 IP for Stephen -- in 3rd year of 7-year, $127M contract

as to his brother-in-agony, Clay is in minors rehabbing from his practice swing, "no timetable for return" after 38.2 risks (IPs), parceled out over 7 nerve-wracking starts

many peers going same route -- SF's MadBum 49 IP, Cueto 42 IP so far -- Noah Syndgard of Mets, 69 IP, JdGrom 123 IP tho, a record for him at 1/2way point

but they're all 'healthy' now & how will they hold up -- not very well & LET'S GO SOX, NY can be beat -- what's happened to Jacoby anyway -- surprised no one has picked up Hanley

Yankees also had a dip before the break while the sox went on a tear. Hopefully the Yankees catch up. They've got the hitting, they just need to figure out what to do with Sonny Gray.

I'll take Cleveland and the Cubs in The World Series, although anything can happen of course. Replay 2016. I am curious to see what trades might happen before the deadline. Yankees need another starter. Cubs pitching has question marks.

Maybe Philly sneaks in, who knows? And the Dodgers have certainly made a good turnaround after an awful start.

Should be a fun stretch run!

The Dodgers added Manny; yes. But recent history (and a family allegiance the the Giants that goes back 120 years) makes me feel that when push comes to shove they will f**k things up.

Pirates gotta get going by pulling away from .500 starting tonite -- However, standing in the way is Clay

MadBum is back, Johnny Cueto & Brandon Belt are nearing returns -- they have Andrew McCutchen & Evan Longoria on a team w/Buster Posey, Hunter Pence
...& w/Pablo Sandoval backwhere he wants to be & playing well -- he looked positively like a speedster legging out an infield hit recently -- Ya The SF Baseball Giants are poised to take over anemic NL West

still think they will -- Longoria is almost ready to return (espn) -- that guy Panik is a good player, he'll be back at some point -- Giants Baseball Club will heat up
LIKE THE BUCS, holy heck -- every so often they really light it up -- that Dickerson kid, cranking

Clay returns tonite -- you know the bat won't come off his shoulder when he's at the plate -- hell even lifting it up there might strain an intercostal yadadada -- 5 IP Max 2nite

the kid threw a 7 IP no-hitter in his debut, after getting hit in the head on a line drive last year in the minors -- great story, altho the bigger, separate one is 'starting pitching' gradually being phased out (his team lost the game)

We Hustle On The Basepaths, Unlike NY's Sanchez -- yes Gary didn't want to get injured in the same fashion his batterymate, Tanaka, did last month -- that's the modern-day game of MLB baseball for ya, & let's go Sox -- Drew returns 2nite, same thing, 4-5 IP max

why can't they just say Sanchez was suspended?

Credit must be given -- Mr. Tanaka, a complete game 3-hit shutout -- felt certain it was his 1st ever CG, it's his 3rd
Clay, watta guy -- went better than six IP of one-run ball -- Curious to know if he swung the bat
The Pirates have outscored their opponents 43-6 over their last 5 games, have won 11 straight & 13 of 14
It was 7-5 w/our last at bats coming up, let's go Sox -- Drew, so-so -- about what was expected

current espn headline

????????????
there's a 1st time for everything obviously
read part of article -- yes, Dale, All American father & grandfather -- it was the lack of drugs that cost him all those HRs --

managed to get thru article -- it's an unabashed I Love Dale Murphy piece -- the writer feels Dale ought to be rewarded for not juicing, by being inducted into the HOF -- the HOF mention is very brief, 99% of it is Dale at home, doting dad & grandad

Let's Go Sox, if that has any place anymore in MLB

I often post about teams besides the Sox -- because Murphy never took steroids, apparently, the article calls for him to be inducted into the HOF in Cooperstown -- the article was posted on ESPN, found it interesting if not a little lame -- take it easy man, you seem stressed nowadays -- Cubs are doing OK, not Tygiz tho

Sox picked up a new pitcher, Eovaldi -- let's go Sox

I understand the thought process re: Dale Murphy. Those who used 100pct seem to be closed out. People who had a cloak of suspicion such as Mike Piazza were delayed. Dale Murphy's numbers per se looked hall of fame quality for Al Kaline say

Regarding Dale Murphy, I have long thought he should be in The HOF. 2,111 hits, 398 HRs. One of the few players to win two consecutive MVPs at the same position.

Look at Kirby Puckett. Same era. 2,304 hits. 207 HRs, .318 batting average. Not exactly earth shattering career totals, batting average notwithstanding. He's in.

From the same time, I think Mattingly should definitely be in.

I also have also thought for a long time that Trammell should be in. Morris somewhat too. Glad to be seeing them being inducted this weekend.

Have to respectfully disagree with the Kaline comparison. over 3,000 hits, just shy of 400 HRs (like Murphy). Youngest player to ever win a batting title. And not that it really matters but he never spent a day in the minor leagues.

I guess I agree re: Kaline. But I think the overall point is the use of PED have really swayed how we look at statistics. Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson (never heard rumours about either) look even better if Roger Clemens' stats are discarded. 30 hr used to be a big deal (Kaline never hit more than 29) Yogi Berra only hit 358 homers, George Brett 317 and Roberto Clemente 240.

Yeah I think Murphy falls short of HOF. Puckett had WS magic and 10 years at the top of his game. Mattingly was one of the best players in the game, but like Ron Guidry his peak was too short.

We just don't know what stats for eras would like like without the juice.

Ive said here many times. Let everyone in and put the players from the PED era in a room with a display explaining the situation (I think the negro league players should have a similar display. Haven't been to Cooperstown since 1967 so I don't know how that's handled)

Bonds and Clemens would have made the hall without steroid; they were both that quality early on. Sammy Sosa wasn't before he turned into the Michelin man

Interesting comments emr. Bonds and Clemens did enough before the juicing. I agree to put them in. I think Bonds won three MVPs before any of this came to light so he would have been in anyway. Clemens would have as well. But I've heard the other side of that coin, that just because they were good before doesn't mean they didn't cheat. I get that. Guess you could throw Pete Rose into the same kind of argument.

Some of these other guys I'm not sure about. Sosa and McGuire are good examples. I don't think they were that great. They just hit a lot of homers. Palmiero I think is a tweener. He is probably worth it I guess. But pointing your finger at the feds, lying about it and then getting busted can't look good.

Baseball has always been a game about stats and today even more so. I don't even know why they have some of these acronyms nowadays.

Regarding the Negro Leagues, I thought there is an exhibit dedicated to that time. Could be wrong I guess.

Like the different thread names -- was vaguely familiar with the Clev. Spiders -- but not the Indy Clowns -- enjoyed those photos -- there should for sure be a separate HOF section for the Negro League era (if there isn't already), or as you said an ongoing exhibit -- (the Dale Murphy quote & article is at espn.com/mlb
would have to look it up but Philly I think at one time had the Philadelphia Blue Jays (1940s?) -- the Yard Goats, that's my favorite one -- can there be a worse name for a bball team?

Not as sure about a separate HOF section for the accused -- Jose Canseco once stole 40 bases & had 40 HR -- he had a great career -- he, Palmiero, Rose, Dennis McLain, Shoeless Joe, Sosa, all the others named -- they all deserve enshrinement, transgressions or not (not Denny probly) -- & not Murphy for the reasons stated in the espn article -- as a reward for not using PED -- That Is Ludicrous!! he was a good player tho, a Frank Howard/Dave "King Kong" Kingman type

Stephen, Shut Down (it was a 7 year $175M deal, not $127M) -- Creative MLB Terminology 101 -- this time, Stephen's rocking a Cervical Nerve Impingement -- it's the same thing that shut down David Price last year -- that was a good one, "unspecified elbow ailment" -- both had/are having clubhouse difficulties, David w/the media last year, Stephen w/Scherzer now

can't keep track of all the trades -- let's go Sox -- don't see what is so great about Eovaldi, seems about in Drew P. territory I guess

Not positive but I think Satchell Paige played for the Indy Clowns.

And Denny McClain only belongs in prison. And this coming from a Tiggers fan.

Sadly, his daughter died in a car accident years ago in Michigan. Not far from where I grew up.

I had never heard of the Yard Goats. Figured they were an independent league team. Was surprised to learn they are a double A team.

Minor leagues are fun. Lots of goofy things there including the names.

Several years ago when I was in grad school at Michigan State, there was a single A team in Lansing, just down the street from the capital. They were in the Cubs organization. Their name was the Lansing Lugnuts. There was some poll (maybe ESPN) and they won for having the best name. I think it's cute but didn't find it THAT funny.

They have two mascots: Big Lug, a large macho male and Ratchet, a demure female. Ratchet always took down Big Lug. It was kind of funny.
