Old news, but first I've heard of this. Impressive reaction on the victim's part.

from: http://www.aol.com/article/2015/07/06/autistic-teen-teaches-bullies-a-lesso n/21205525/

After Gavin Joseph, a teenager with Asperger's syndrome, was beat up by a gang of bullies, he taught them an important lesson about his condition and life perspectives.

Joseph was tricked by the group of bullies into thinking that they wanted to be friends with him. When we met up with them one day, they violently attacked him, deeming him "weird" and "creepy" due to his condition.

The Illinois teenager handled the situation peacefully by recording a 20-minute video about Asperger's syndrome so that his bullies could learn about life from his point of view. He asked that the assailants each write an essay about Asperger's syndrome and that they participate in community service working with disabled people.

Educate the people, choose how to react rather than just act seeking vengeance.

Unfortunately after those kids do their penance they will probably have a few beers; turn to each other and say: "What a stupid f**ng dork." I've seen too many of this kids; they seem incapable of remorse

"educate the people"???

you're kidding. First, the person you're trying to educate needs to be receptive to the idea. Secondly, the person needs enough brain matter to absorb any lesson. Third, said grey matter needs to be able to formulate and process what it has hopefully retained and manifest the ideas into action without a) anything emotional, spiritual or psychological hindering the process (i.e., the mentality of a skinhead, racist, peer pressure, socioeconomic hardships and a myriad of other things too many to mention and b) have the heart, as well as the brain, to come to the realization that being educated is needed for them to function in and with a civil society.

that's why there are prisons.

and gina, even if you're right, wouldn't you agree that being educated is just one step in the process? Look at the world...some people, educated or not, are just predisposed to being violent, for whatever reason. as emr said, some people know no remorse.

I thought you of all people would appreciate the "turn the other cheek" concept, but those ideals do tend to look better on paper than in practice, I agree. We all like to talk a high religious line, except when push comes to shove and we are required to actually live by it.

At any rate, this attack was his business, and he handled it gracefully and courageously. If even one of those bullies learns something and finds some heart from doing court-ordered community service with disabled people it will be better than if they just went to prison and became even worse a-holes.

And gina still rocks. She gets it.

Gina's response was just a statement on how this boy handled this situation. She wasn't taking a legal position. For that matter neither was I. It just seemed a refreshing change of pace from the typical anger/reaction/vengeance cycle, and I was impressed that it takes a " mentally ill" person to teach us "normal" people a superior way of handling schoolyard bullying.

You still have to try. Some people will begin to think differently others will not. Yes violent people need to be restrained but our prison system does not address their core which is fear. Any angry person is afraid of something underneath their rage. Find out what that is, and then you can work with them to change how they react to their feelings. A man who goes into a rage over his woman looking at another man, is fearful he may lose her, so he reacts with rage, threatens her or the other person or both.

Bullies have insecurities deep down, to make themselves feel superior to someone else, they bully them to puff up their own ego. They are pathetic, controlling, abusive people. Now in this instance with what the autistic kid did, it probably will not change the bully, but it may change others around him, which can influence him. One candle can provide light, even in a room full of bullies and it only takes a few people to make sure the bully does not snuff it out.
