I was considering moving to the South to attend school. Not sure where yet (have to wait to see where I get in), but possibly Nashville, Virgina or the Carolina's. Being from PA, would I be looked down upon as a "yankee" or is that in the past?? Sorry if I'm being ignorant lol

What do you mean looked upon as a yankee? You are a yankee!

Seriously, the sentiment still exists among some folks, but it is more amusing than troubling. I doubt you'd ever run it to it on a college campus.

One of my best friends in college was from Chicago and everybody called him "Yankee." Perhaps times have changed a bit.

"looked down upon as a 'yankee'"?

Most college towns in the South, or anywhere, are going to be progressive and exciting. Nashville is great, Columbia SC, Athens GA (Athens is wonderful! light years beyond most towns in the entire USA for culture and coolness!), tons of great places. As far as the Yankee thing, not much you can do about that if you are from the North. Just don't wear a blue Civil War uniform and you should blend right in. Really, gotta say man, this is 2015, where did you come up with that?

As far as the whole "racist south" thing goes, fact is that blacks and whites mingle more freely and talk to each other - in college towns - more than in the North or West. I enjoyed that a lot when I lived in the South. Yes there is tension and hostility, but on the edges of the cultures you will find less ice between the races. Of course, once you get out of the city limits, your black pals will hide under the dashboard when you stop for gas, because it is still awful bad out in the countryside. Same with long hair, any hippy or urban punk stuff, there are still places where it is EXACTLY like that scene in Easy Rider where they walk in to the diner and everyone stares and nobody talks. No exaggeration, it is a chilly experience.

Assuming you are a music fan since you are here, then University of Georgia at Athens, Athens has the coolest music scene anywhere except maybe Austin Texas.

Enjoy!

Thanks everyone. The reason I ask is because I was in Atlanta a few years ago to see some Braves games (my favorite team) and went into a store at the CNN center and the cashier asked what us Yankees were doing down here. It didn't bother me, I was just curious if this is common. It won't impact my decision though

Cashier was just being friendly, heard your accents and was making small talk. One thing for sure in the South, people in general are warmer, more well-mannered and easy with conversation than in standoffish North or West. I miss the courtesy and friendliness I found there.

That said, as a longhair at the time, I certainly do not miss the Deliverance style redneck terror I ran into when backpacking through the Smokies, or not being served or even acknowledged in diners deep in the bayous of Lousiana. You gotta watch your back out there. They can be pretty mean and crosseyed in the backwoods, for real.

If you decide on Charlottesville, Virginia you will get a great education while living in a progressive city with a music scene that easily rivals Athens, GA.

I don't remember Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Jerry Garcia Symphony Celebration, Primus, or U2 recently playing Athens. (I could be wrong.)

As far as bigotry toward folks from the North... you'll be just fine.

you have to tolerate lifted pickups, some with the rebel flag waving proudly off a 6 foot flagpole in the middle of the bed, if you ride a bike you have got to watch out for lunatics who think bikes belong on the sidewalk, you have to know what grits are and like biscuits and gravy for breakfast.

Oh and people smoke everywhere.

Just turn the question around. How do people where you live treat people with a southern accent?

My take is the south is more tolerant and friendlier in general. But there are knuckleheads everywhere.

My advise; wherever you go, just be as you are, you'll be fine.
