I haven't been here in a while. My stepfather passed away unexpectedly. He dealt with more than I ever dreamed. My mother was diagnosis with Alzheimer's three years ago. I thought she was in the early stages. It now appears that it is the middle stages. I no longer work. I am her full time caregiver. Sometimes she doesn't sleep for 30 to 48 hours. If you are so inclined remember both of us in prayer.

I am so sorry to hear about your situation. Being a caregiver is very difficult work, please find some support groups to get help for yourself. Prayers are on the way.

I went through this with my mom with the help and assistance of my dear aunt, who now lives across the street from us. Auntie is starting to require help and assistance, herself - having just suffered a stroke a few weeks ago.

Events like this are certainly life/game changers. That you accept the responsibility for her well-being speaks volumes about you as a person.

Don't be afraid or ashamed to seek help when you need it. Relatives, friends and even church groups can be valuable in providing you with needed break times.

I'm not necessarily a religious person, but my morning exercise ritual is followed by meditation and requests from my creator for strength, wisdom and above all - patience.

You're in my thoughts.

sounds tough
If you haven't looked into it yet, there is assistance out there under many circumstances. Seek out the help of a local expert / social worker, etc
Prayers and vibes sent

Hang in there Lisajess, can relate, as primary caregiver of a deeply autistic child. You are a heroine for being there like that for someone. I have no idea how you would handle it when someone does not sleep for two days straight and you have to protect them all the time. I don't know what is available where you are, but out here there is respite care you can sign up for at the Disability Office, to get some breaks.

Lisa let's deal with your number one problem, your mom's sleeplessness. (I believe the term is sun downing.) Get your doctor to prescribe something immediately. Seroquel was a lifesaver for us. More important than Arricept and Namenda which do not restore cognitive ability merely maintain the current level for a short while and are expensive. Alzheimer's is a horrible disease in that it prevents the person from sleeping. The lack of sleep make the Alzheimer's worse. Both of you and you especially need rest. Get something to knock her out. Seroquel worked for us. You will be in my prayers.

Thank you all for the prayers, positive vibes, and kind words.

Charles I will be asking her doctor about Seroquel in the morning. Thank you for telling me about it. She is on Arricept and Namenda. Her part D insurance has let me know they will no longer pay for Namenda, starting next month. So I will be looking for new part D insurance.

Thank you all again.

Prayers and thoughts are with you. Some great advice here and especially from Charles. Seroquel has many great uses and definitely calms people and allows relaxation.

Hopefully you have some support and help. Don't try to do it all yourself as your health is important to both of you.

Lisa losing Namenda as part of the equation may not be bad. Namenda is used in conjunction with Arricept to counter Arricept's side effects such as stomach troubles I believe. Maybe your mom won't experience any side effects and if she does the insurance should pick it back up on Dr.'s orders. Also like others have suggested there are resources out there. We were able to use a faith based day care which was very reasonably priced. Please PM me if you want I'll share anything I learned during our caring for my mom. And again you will be in my prayers.

Thank you for your advice. Soon after this I finally got her doctor to agree to seroquel at night, a small dosage. Two weeks ago she had a panic attack in the doctors office. He put on a small dose in the morning and doubled her night time dosage. She is eating better, and we both get some sleep.

Thank you again.........all of you.
