In 1965, Sandy Koufax refused to pitch in Game One of the World Series because it was Yom Kippur, a Jewish holy day. Instead of Koufax, Don Drysdale pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers giving up seven runs in 2 2/3 innings. When Walter Alston, the manager, came to pull him from the game, Drysdale said: "I bet right now you wish I was Jewish, too." The Dodgers lost to the Minnesota Twins, 8-2.

I knew that story. Funny. Here is another one about it: There is a Simpsons episode where Krusty the Klown (who is Jewish) bitches about Sandy Koufax claiming Koufax cost him five hundred bucks because he wouldn't pitch on Yom Kippur and Krusty bet on the Dodgers.

Lonnie was every bit as important as Yaz was that year -- 22-9, silenced St.L on 4 hits over 17 innings -- unforgetteable

Awesome -- three greats, all with different teams, at the end of their careers in Washington -- poor Denny, the magic vanished quick for that guy -- from 31-6 in 1968 to 10-22 in '71 under Ted (latter info googled, former not ) -- heck he even had a cup of coffee in '72 for Dick Williams' Oakland A's, who won WS that year

Gates Brown's comment on Denny on an ESPN show one time was good -- paraphrasing, "you better be sure to count the fingers on your hand after you shake hands with Denny..."

Great photo -- & Curt -- what a player, w/him & Lou Brock at the top of that Cahdinals lineup -- he & Denny locked horns in their prime at the '68 WS -- & The Kid -- why do I think Ted may have said "screw this" after trying to manage those 2 haha
cool of Mickery Tettleton too, altho Bill Freehan is my all time Tygiz catcher -- & John Mayberry -- he hit 'em a mile for the Royales
