Tonight Northern Virginia is experiencing cool dry temps in the 60's under a beautiful waning crescent moon. I just got in from a walk full of hoot owls, croaking frogs, and the spirits of Spotsylvania County. The moon always plays a big part in my nightly walks.

Tonight it occurred to me that I don't really have a favorite phase. I don't even know if I prefer a waxing or waning moon.

So I ask you Brothers and Sisters... which do you prefer? Waxing or waning?

Waxing, I love it when it's big and shiney.

Waning, since a new moon darkens the skies for the really interesting stuff, the ISS, satellites, meteors, the Milky Way and UFOs (never seen one, but I keep looking!).

The Perseid meteor shower is Aug 10-11.

The next new moon is August 6th Brock. Hopefully it will still be pretty dark for the meteor shower.

I like being able to see the sky as well but I also really like the ethereal blue emanating out of a gigantic full moon.

Thanks, that works out perfectly, as I will be in your fair state starting the 7th, and that part of VA is one of the darkest places in the eastern US.

I was wrong on the Perseids-its Aug 11-12 at the peak, but a few days either side of that should be decent.

If you want to look for the ISS, use this for your location:

perfect.

I'm taking a lady friend to Waterfire here in Providence on Saturday the 10th. Now, with this info, a ride down to the darkened beach in Narragansett after that, some seafood and sit on the beach and watch the light show, maybe some EAP just for good measure.

man, this is going to be good.

The Perseids always come somewhere close to the 2d weekend in August.
