Our 12 year old plays cello in her middle school orchestra and was selected to be in Honor Orchestra. And to top it off, she gets to play the Paramount Theater this weekend in CR! I couldn't be happier for her

http://www.paramounttheatrecr.com/Events/20130126/61/Metropolitan-Orchestra -Festival.aspx

The Metropolitan Orchestra Festival is a combined effort by the orchestra directors of the Cedar Rapids Community School District, the Linn-Mar Community School District, and the Mount Vernon School District in partnership with the Orchestra Iowa School. Over 250 of the top string students from the metropolitan and surrounding area have been selected to participate in this festival.

That is awesome! Love stories of kid's from here succeeding and making their parent's proud. She must be very good. Congratulations to all of you!

I know she's excited. But I'm not sure she knows what a great experience/honor it will be to be on that stage. Something I'm sure she'll remember for a long time.

Is she gonna play some 'Brothers?

Seriously, congratulations to daughter and to papa! The fruit don't roll far from the tree, they say.

I'd love for them to break into Liz Reed, but I don't think that'll happen.

And that fruit came from her mom, for sure

Thanks for all the well wishes!

Now...she's just being a 12 year old kid, God bless her.

The signifigance of it will hit her later and she'll have one of those "OMG" moments.

it's actually quite cool for a kid to be doing that. That's big time.

The concert on Saturday was unbelievably cool! Reya's 6th grade sounded fantastic and then the 7th grade was really good. 8th grade was even better. It's amazing how just a couple years can make a huge difference.

It's funny, Rusty, that you mentioned them playing the Brothers. Each grade got to play a rock song with a local bass player in addition to their other, more traditional orchestra songs they played. That was really cool. Reya's orchestra played We Will Rock You. 7th grade played Sunshine of Your Love (which was good but probably the worst song of the night - it was tough for them to keep the time on that tune). 8th grade played Purple Haze.

All in all, it was an incredible experience for her. I told her the last concert I saw at the Paramount was Widespread Panic. She was pretty jazzed about that. She lit up and said I played on the same stage as that rock band! I'd say she gets it

There's an act that plays here in Birmingham called Blue Galaxy. They're players from the local symphony who play rock songs in bars and clubs. The link below is the only video that I can find right now. Not a good video (camera setting on on a table decapitates the entire ensemble) . In this clip they're playing a ... Journey tune. Just the same - enjoyable!

Congrats! Just remember; no matter how much you become involved with the concert never, ever yell out "Whipping Post!"

Very cool, Chad.

Has Reya tackled any of Bach's 'Suites for Solo Cello"? Either a whole suite or movement?

I played cello for about ten years. Thinking of starting up again.
