Only in Rhode Island, literally, do we "celebrate" Victory over Japan.

Somebody, please, call our legislature and suggest another way for our state employees to get a paid holiday. This one is embarrassing.

thanks.

Given that we too often throw away much of our history, I kind of like that RI still observes this day.

If that makes me politically incorrect, oh well.

Since you "kind of " like it, it only makes you indecisive.

your choice. That's cool.

I wonder how the Japanese living here feel about it. To me, and maybe them?, it's just that: history.

I still think it's a union-backed ploy to give state workers a much needed holiday in August.

I'm being kind of facetious...

Hey, when I worked fior the State of Texas we even got "Confederate Heroes Day" off. I'd never even heard of it before.

Indecisive might be the nicest thing you've ever called me Hawk.

"... embarrassing."? Run that one by my neighbor who liberated Guam and fought at Okinawa as a U.S. Marine. He was going to be part of the invasion of Japan. VJ Day was the greatest day of his life... the war ended and he was alive.

Now, Rich. When we've called you a conservative or libertarian, we meant it in the nicest way.

my father and two uncles fought there too. They carried that with them their whole lives and didn't need a holiday commemorating it. So why doesn't the whole country celebrate it? Why just RI? Like I said, a paid holiday in an otherwise holiday-less month for state workers. I'm not belittling the significance of the event but let it go.

I'm hoping we'll eventually instate a holiday called "Happy we're finally pulling out of Germany Day." Then a holiday called "Happy we're finally pulling out of Japan Day." Then a holiday called "Happy we're finally pulling out of South Korea Day." Then a holiday called "Happy we're finally pulling out of Great Britain Day." Then a holiday called "Happy we're finally pulling out of Saudi Arabia Day." Etc., etc....Because we can no longer pay the cost of defending those quite capable of doing it themselves...We'll eventually call this season of holidays "Tax payer Relief" season.

One of the State Holidays in Georgia is Stonewall Jackson's birthday.
