Why not?

J Howell's spreads for week 1 (he is just some guy who has been putting up spreads/predictions based on his power ratings for about as long as I've used a computer for college football info. The spreads are not always accurate to the eventual Vegas line, but something to look at):

Boise is giving up 8.5 to Sparty? No way......
I'm surprised my Huskers are only giving up 7.5 to So Miss too, but spreads this early are about as useful as a fork with soup.
I can't wait though, GO BIG RED

Initial reaction to these spreads (originally posted 2+ months ago here http://www.jhowell.net/cf/cfpred.txt), I like the value on these teams with his lines:

Eastern Michigan +8.5
Michigan St +8.5
Nebraska -7.5 (will be interesting to see what kind of team Ellis Johnson fields with SMiss, I expect terrific D, maybe a solid under? JHowell's total is 55).
Washington St +20.5
Duke +2.5

Huh, Gus Malzhan debuts with Arkansas State at Oregon. And Norm Chow faces off against Lane Kiffin with Hawaii vs USC.

In looking at the coaching changes, I had either fogotten or not even heard about many...like Terry Bowden at Akron!

Yeah, I think those are two liines that will be way off when official numbers come out. Makes you question his power rating system to come up with spreads like that. If I get a chance I will see if Sagarin or Sheridan has anything out yet for power ratings.

You are a big Husker fan? I will be at the Sept 29th Wisconsin-Nebraska game. Will have to look up oldcoot or maybe mglowstein is going to that game?

I had no idea David Wilson was coming out for this years draft until the G-men picked him.

Have no idea where the VT running attack will come from this year.

I honestly think SO Miss and perhaps Ark ST give us more trouble than the Bruins, I will be shocked if NEB does not win by 4 touchdowns in Pasedina.

I have no clue why fsu would even entertain that thought, the little 12 is a sinking ship.

Ya man, I'm a guy that follows the Skers 365 days a year. It's a family thing, lol. Are you a Wiscy guy? I believe payback is in order for the Badgers, O'Brien is no Wilson. I really question their philosophy on relying on transfers.

I think that some people at FSU feel like they are a big time football program in a conference that is not big time in terms of college football pecking order. Beyond that I don't know or care what happens. I am just going to focus my time on the scheduled games, players and coaches and let all the other BS that I can't stand about this sport alone.

I grew up a Nebraska fan. Bernie Kosar came from my high school as did a couple other kids who went to play at University Miami of Florida. Alot of kids in my school were Miami fans, I was the only Nebraska fan. The early 1990s were very rough. Especially 1992. But the rest is history, the near upset of FSU the following year and then beating Miami in 94. Oh those were great games.

I lost touch with the program after Solich's firing. I wanted Bo hired after the Alamo bowl, but ultimately grew to hate AD Pederson and HC Callahan. I never reconnected with them, but still have a soft spot for the Huskers and love the history of the teams that I grew up rooting for.

Now we have a family member playing for the Huskers. WR #6 Marlowe. oldcoot is a Husker fan. mglowstein is a Wisconsin alum, but I don't think he is active here any more.

You absolutely can not doubt what Wisconsin produces at QB. Their history is filled with underwhelming QBs who contend for All-Big-Ten honors. I think the kid from Kansas St that transfered in didn't work out, but they typically get excellent results from their QBs. Plus their system is great no matter who the OC is. I expect Matt Canada to be very successful OC for them with Crist moving on to Pitt's HC spot. To be honest with you, I actually worry more about them landing big name transfers for their QB gig than the historical n0-name type QBs they have fielded in the past.

Cool your related to Marlowe, I think he's a pretty steady player. He also became our most reliable return guy in terms of ball security. He's one of the first of a wave of Youngstown guys Pelini brought in.

But damn I'm just glad to talking some CFB on here.

Tim would give his right arm and then some for his team. He is a really hard worker and from what I have seen an ideal teammate. His size works against him at this level of football, but he is fast. It is a little strange to see a guy like him the starting slot WR or a primary punt/kick return man as he was 2 years ago, but everyone speaks highly of his practice and work ethic. We are obviously hoping his final year can be a very memorable one for him and the team.

Our area in Northeast Ohio has produced alot of very fine college football players recently, most have found their way to Michigan (Manningham, Burgess), Ohio State (Clarret, Herron), Notre Dame (Kyle McCarthy), and some very good OL guys like John Greco and Steve Vallos who both started in the NFL. This area is strong recruiting territory, DeJuan Groce was from Cleveland, the only big time Ohio player to land at Nebraska prior to Bo's arrival. My only fear is that Bo relies too heavily on guys from his alma mater (2 early commits this year, plus RB Heard from a couple years ago), plus the OC is from Mooney too. Mooney is a good program though, they win and play for Championships often. With Bo's connection to the Ohio recruiting circuit it makes Nebraska certainly feel like a Big Ten school and Bo coaches like a Big Ten coach too in my opinion.

Edit - forgot to mention, Ohio State's best defensive player is from Mooney, John Simon (1st team Big Ten). So again, their is talent here in the Youngstown area if Bo can get more of it in Lincoln, but tOSU and Big Blue have strong ties here as well.

So using the above information, Michigan is the Big Ten favorite and has a 9.5 win total. Road trips to Nebraska, Ohio State and the neutral site vs Bama. Plus they face MSU at home. They have to split or better and then not lose one to inferior teams like at ND, at Pur, at Min or home vs AF, ILL, NW and Iowa.

If they start 0-1 after losing to Bama they would only have 1 game margin of error on an over 9.5 play.

Michigan Big Ten Champs? It is possible. I would expect Nebraska to beat them in Lincoln. Between Mich, Mich State and Nebraska, they all might split vs eachother, although I think Nebraska might have the best chance to go 2-0 on those and MSU the most likely candidate for an 0-2. For Michigan St a mid-season stretch of Iowa, @Mich, @Wisky, Neb is a tough run for MSU. They ran into a similar tough stretch last season and exceeded expectations before falling in Lincoln.

Nebraska goes Idaho St (essentially a bye week) Wisky and tOSU back-to-back, but then get a bye week, that sets up about as well as it could playing those two teams back-to-back.

Michigan goes bye, @Pur, ILL, MSU, @ Neb, @Minn (that game vs Minn might be tougher than people would think situationally and mentally for Michigan - upset alert).

Legends division should come down to Michigan or Nebraska. Seems like a very reasonable wager on Nebraska at 5:1 for the overall conference title.

Michigan
Sept. 1 vs. Alabama (Arlington, Texas)
Sept. 8 Air Force
Sept. 15 Massachusetts
Sept. 22 at Notre Dame
Sept. 29 Bye Week
Oct. 6 at Purdue
Oct. 13 Illinois (Homecoming)
Oct. 20 Michigan State
Oct. 27 at Nebraska
Nov. 3 at Minnesota
Nov. 10 Northwestern
Nov. 17 Iowa
Nov. 24 at Ohio State

Michigan State
Aug. 31 Boise State
Sept. 8 at Central Michigan
Sept. 15 Notre Dame
Sept. 22 Eastern Michigan
Sept. 29 Ohio State
Oct. 6 at Indiana
Oct. 13 Iowa
Oct. 20 at Michigan
Oct. 27 at Wisconsin
Nov. 3 Nebraska
Nov. 10 BYE
Nov. 17 Northwestern
Nov. 24 at Minnesota

Nebraska
Sept. 1 Southern Miss
Sept. 8 at UCLA
Sept. 15 Arkansas State
Sept. 22 Idaho State
Sept. 29 Wisconsin
Oct. 6 at Ohio State
Oct. 13 BYE
Oct. 20 at Northwestern
Oct. 27 Michigan
Nov. 3 at Michigan State
Nov. 10 Penn State
Nov. 17 Minnesota
Nov. 23 at Iowa

I think I really like Nebraska over 8.5 wins. This IS a team that has lost to Iowa State and Northwestern at HOME under Pelini, but if you think this Husker team is maturing and consider their D underachieved greatly last season, then this could be a strong year for Big Red. Take just their 4 toughest games (Wisky, tOSU, Mich and Mich St), even if they split those they still have a 1 game margin of error for another loss. I think Nebraska is a strong play for 9-3 or better this year.

Thanks for starting this years talk.

I am surprised that no one gives Mich a chance vs. my Bama.

We lost 4 first round picks and a second round. That is a RB, 2 DBs, 2 LBs. also lost another LB,DB, nose guard, H back, o lineman, 2 WR's. Our 2nd team qB transferred. That is a bunch.
On the other hand do have some talent. Mostly inexperienced.

O line should be strong. RBs may be real good. WR may be a surprise. AJ. At QB is good but if he gets hurt look out.
D line has experience at DE and we will see if Jesse Williams is the real thing at NG. We have 5 or 6 good LBs. 1 good corner, 1 good safety. A bunch of good ones but not much experience.

Also a pretty good coach.

In Sec West.

LSU and Bama fight it out again.
Not sure how the next 4 shake out.
I got:

Auburn
Arky
Misst st
Tex AM
Ole Miss

Sec East

SC and Ga fight it out.

Ga
SC
Fl
Tn
Mizo
Vandy
Ky

I like USC over Oreg then Stan and then the rest. I like Mike Leach at W St and Rod at Az

Big 10
I take Wisconsin

Acc
Va tech.

Play bal.

Sorry I suck at this but if I take Oregon to win

Pac 12 Champion Odds*
USC -160
Oregon +160
Washington +1000
Stanford +1500

My 10 dollar bet wins me 16 when Oregon wins Pac12? I have a friend going to Vegas today and would get him to lay some money down.

At this point with Alabama I think I know what they are going to be. Saban's been there 5 years and has 2 National Championships. The SEC is at the top of the food chain and Alabama is at the top of that food chain. So even with their losses, I think a matchup vs an up-and-coming, rebuilding Big Ten team I am going to side with the Tide, although I'm not racing to to lay a bunch of points there.

When I look back at Michigan's 2011 team, yes there were amazingly 11-2 with the first win over tOSU in several years and a Sugar Bowl win over VT. I saw all of it. I also saw some of those games as very very close and could have swung the other way fairly easily. Let's face it, the ND win, if somebody just told you how they won that game you likely would not believe it until you saw it with your own eyes. The tOSU game was very competitive and for as down as Buckeyes were last year, UM's win is still impressive, but not like they beat the New York Giants or anything. And vs VT, come on, VT was in total control of that game, but their red zone O was awful and Michigan benefited from some extreme odd good fortune as well (VT did have a 377-184 and 22-12 FD edges in the game).

Brady Hoke is the real deal which I said when he got hired. Michigan is an improving team and a legit Big Ten title contender, but on this stage, vs this opponent, with this Michigan team, there is just no way I can say I think Michigan would win vs Bama. 2 TDs? I don't know, but Bama wins I would bet that. Michigan D still has alot of growing to do.

One thing to watch with Michigan this year is how they use #2 QB Devin Gardner. He will be on the field alot more as a non-QB and will be touching the ball alot more. Michigan has some playmakers on O, not sure they can be consistent against Saban's crew though. Their **** might work vs the Irish or get some lucky breaks vs the Hokies D when it mattered most, but they will need more than luck vs the Tide.

THe VT Defense Kicked the VT offense's butt in the first spring scrimmage. which is typical for first
spring scrimmages with tech.

12 sacks
