Thread: Can The Raiders Get Any Worse?

What an embarrassment last night, but at least it was at the hands of my team, the Niners. Just how do you fire a guy like Jon Gruden who is in the first year of a 10 years, $100 Million contract? Mark Davis has got to be the most humbled, embarrassed owner in pro sports right now.............

Curious, I looked at the stats from Gruden's last coaching gig. He was 57-55 in 7 years at Tampa Bay. And for THAT, two games over .500, you nab $100 Million? Mark Davis just does not seem to me to be the brightest candle on the cake. Of course hindsight is always 20/20, but things are looking AWFUL grim in Raiders land.

I thought of this last night: What if the Raiders tank the rest of the year on purpose?

And there was an article on Yahoo this morning asking the same question...

TheBabe714 - 11/2/2018 at 01:26 PM

Oh Chucky, whats he doing now...57 - 55 with Tampa wow I never new that.
crazy stuff and it gets better, as coach of Tampa he wins a super bowl against of all teams
the Raiders.

Even The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt makes fun of Haircut Davis.

Bringing back former coaches rarely works - Art Shell, Joe Gibbs, etc. Doesn't help that the franchise is leaving CA and their pretty rabid cosplay fanbase.

It's got to be hard sucking that bad when everyone is watching and just laughing at you. My wife loves Jon Gruden, so I have soft spot for him to. I really feel bad for him. I guess you sign up for it and it doesn't go well this is what you get. He's brought some of the criticism on himself, but the way they are losing, damn. Nick Mullens! Good for him. But Raiders lose by 4 TDs to a 3rd string QB who never started an NFL game. Wow. Shanahan > Gruden.

Ya gotta hit rock bottom before the healing can start 😁

From this morning's San Jose Mercury News:

"(Raiders defensive coordinator) Paul Guenther's defense is historically bad through eight games, on pace to allow the most yards per play in NFL history currently sitting at 6.75. Guenther joined Gruden's staff as the hyped coordinator from a staunch Bengals defense, but his Raiders unit has been far from the same. The Raiders are allowing 31.5 points per game (31st in the league), 144.5 rushing yards per game (31st) and 262.6 passing yards per game (22nd)."

I guess some would say you could put all that on Guenther, and maybe there is some truth in that. But most yards per play in NFL history? WOW. Yeah, I know the season is only half over but that is a bad, BAD statistic.

Sure looks right now that Mark Davis would have been MUCH better off paying Khalil Mack than paying his new Coach...........

Yeah but from what I was told he won it all in his first year there when he basically inherited Tony Dungy's stellar cast of characters. After that players started to leave and there were some really really bad 4 or 5 win years.

Absolutely. amazing that he got this deal. Let see how it plays out-

Can The Raiders Get Any Worse?

Yes. How does 1-15 sound?

Jerry - 11/5/2018 at 04:07 AM

Even the Falcons are at .500 right now.

I like Gruden--he is dumping and knows it will take 3-4 years so keeping Mack and others makes little sense as they were not going anywhere. Smart folks dump and get young players and then add free agents when you have the strong core. I think Gruden is building his own team.

Will probably grab a QB in the draft and build his O and D lines.

I have been watching the Jets do it wrong for so many years by signing an keeping vets too long and never building enough young talent. You need to get a core in the draft as those guys are cheap and young.

Unless of course you are lucky enough to have Mahomes or Rogers or Brady and Breed. Gruden did not have that and a great defensive player doesn't make the playoffs for a team.

Been a Raiders fan since 1967. Well sort of 66 but really it was the Mad Bomber and bump and run that drew me in and that really started in 67.

I am willing to give Gruden time but did not expect it too be anywhere near this bad. And this is not the NBA where tanking might get you a difference maker quickly. Browns have had a million high draft choices for years and how has that worked out? At this point I don't even know for sure that my fandom will even follow to Vegas.

One things about the old Raiders is they were different than everyone else. Not so sure that would ever be the case again.

crazyjoe - 11/9/2018 at 10:58 PM

I love sports, but I am mainly just focused hardcore on the competition. But this aspect of the game is very interesting to think about, what makes some organizations seemingly always be hanging around for the post season, Pats, Yankees, Pack etc., while others, Browns, Sixers, even my Beloved Bears and White Sox seem always around the bottom???....... good question/discussion here....Peace....joe

rmack - 11/12/2018 at 08:17 PM

This is one final f-you to Oakland and Alameda County, something the Davis family has long relished and been better at than actually fielding a quality team. The Raiders are offloading salary and players who can actually play for draft picks and players who can be molded by Gruden in an attempt to put together a quality team for the big Vegas debut. This is an intentional cost-cutting destruction of the team in order to create a contender down the line. Playing the Oakland fan base for the suckers they have long been, milking the last dollar out of the Bay Area they can flee with. The most disgraceful and unprincipled franchise and ownership in the NFL, and that's really saying something.

Lee - 11/12/2018 at 10:24 PM

Can't argue with your assessment. Raiders are a mess.

I like Gruden and miss him on ESPN. Having said that, I think you'd have to be a fool to think he didn't know what the Raiders were planning when he took the job. I feel bad for Carr. He didn't sign on for this.

When I was in high school, our baseball team was in the running for the conference title. Our shortstop was head and shoulders better than anyone on our team. But the A.D. moved him up to varsity during the season. We were crushed. Granted we were freshmen, but to see our best player (kind of) traded away, we were crushed and didn't win.

Gotta be kind of what the Raiders players feel like.

tbomike - 11/12/2018 at 11:40 PM

Well if folks didn't see it here is what Davis had to say about it all yesterday. I don't completely dismiss everything he is saying while at the same time don't buy it all either. But I do at least believe they did not start out with the intent to move Mack. start-buck-stops-me
